Greetings!
You are invited to join the San Diego Renewable Energy Society (SDRES) on July 14th Wednesday, at 7pm for a presentation on "Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) - opportunities for business and consumers", by SDRES member Charlie Johnson.
Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles are gaining popularity, from the do-it-yourself & aftermarket conversions marketplace to mainstream auto manufacturers, most notably the 2012 GM's Chevy Volt. Industry forecasts are projecting 13 million PHEVs sold in the United States by 2030. For the early adopters, there are many products available today to convert almost any Hybrid vehicle to Plug-In Hybrid Electric. Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Mercedes Benz, Ford, GM, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Mitsubishi, Peugeot, Porsche, Suzuki, Toyota, Volkswagon and Volvo all have PHEV model production release dates within the next five years. With so much effort and money invested in PHEV Research and Development, one would have to ask, "Is the market for PHEVs driving the development, or is the development driving the market?"
This presentation will examine the PHEV industry, starting with a technology overview. We'll build a business case for the consumer for the convertion or purchase of a PHEV. Is there a Return on Investment beyond gas savings? For PHEV charging, what equipment do you need for your home and business? What about safety? What else can you do with a PHEV that you couldn't do with an internal combustion engine vehicle? You know your house can power a car, but did you know a car can power a house? Next, we'll explore the manufacturing and technology opportunities in Vehicle to Grid (V2G) and bi-directional charging. Are the utilities and the local governments counting on consumers to store renewable energy in our cars, to balance the energy load curve? Would the auto manufactures seek to prevent us from powering the grid with mileage-warrantied batteries? |
