Greetings!
You are invited to join the San Diego Renewable Energy Society (SDRES) on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 7pm for a presentation : Biofuels: The Next Generation
Biofuels are the only commercial alternative to petroleum today. While the first generation biofuels like corn ethanol and soy bio-diesel sparked the “food vs. fuel” controversy, the second and third wave of biofuels, based on non-food crop cellulose, algae and other exotic materials, bypass the “food vs. fuel” issue.!
These advanced biofuels are on the cusp of commercialization. The two outstanding speakers in this SDRES seminar are from leading companies in San Diego who will describe and discuss the latest developments in the advanced biofuels space. They will address questions such as what are the differences
between various generations of biofuels? How important is the
feedstock (raw material for the final product) choice? In
addition, they will also address some of the challenges and
opportunities for mass commercialization of advanced
biofuels.
Sandra Jacobson Co-founder
and Principal Scientist, Algenic Inc. Sandra
Jacobson is co-founder of Algenic Inc., a San Diego start-up
company focused on genetic enhancement of algae for bio-based
fuel production; and has consulted on DARPA-funded projects
for utilization of cellulosic biomass for transportation fuel.
Dr. Jacobson worked as a research scientist at UCSD and
University of Colorado in the area of molecular genetics,
studying mechanisms of gene expression. Her studies of
micro-scale cellular responses to environmental conditions
complement her long-standing interest in macro-scale issues of
water quality and sustainable habitat preservation.
