(Congratulations, Semper Solaris) Selection #10 (Chula Vista) 245 Ash Avenue, Chula Vista, CA 91910 This ‘Clark Kent’ of homes is a bank repossession purchased by the City of Chula Vista and transformed into an inspiring energy super hero. It’s now a productive household boasting a certified Home Energy Rating System (HERS) score of 13 (0 is net zero energy home). To help get that low score the City installed new attic and crawl-space insulation, dual-paned low-E doors and windows, a tankless water heater and split A/C cooling and ventilation. This home also served as a real-world training ground for local unemployed and underemployed workers learning skills to help them join the home performance industry. The solar PV modules were installed by non-profit GRIDAlternatives, who offers community college district students boots-on-the-roof field training as they work to earn their installation credentials. The programs the City of Chula Vista leveraged to create this Sweet 16 winner puts the benefits of energy efficiency and solar within reach of most any property owner, regardless of annual household income. Se habla Espanol!
