Event Summary:
The San Diego City Council unanimously approved the Climate Action Plan. It took dozens of meetings and political courage, including 60 business and NGOs voicing their endorsement. This accomplishment was featured in the New York Times, with the headline: "San Diego vows to move entirely to Renewable Energy in 20 years". Many deserve credit, but the primary driver of this initiative is Nicole Capretz, who helped author the Climate Action Plan while working with Interim Mayor Todd Gloria. Nicole left government to form the Climate Action Campaign, to keep the politicians and the community focused.
So, Now What?
We have 20 years to grow from 38% renewable to 100%. The are 4 other critical elements of the plan:
- waste reduction
- increased transit
- efficient buildings and
- climate resiliency.
That's a major lift and will require full participation by government, business, NGOs and SDG&E.
How do we measure our progress?
What are the milestones and yearly targets?

Event Summary:
President Barack Obama unveiled his plan to tackle greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power plants. He called the Plan "the single most important step America has ever taken in the fight against global climate change."
"Climate change is no longer just about the future we're predicting for our children or our grandchildren, it's about the reality that we're living with every day—right now," Obama said, adding that stronger storms, deeper droughts and more frequent floods are the results of the environmental shift.
"This is one of those rare issues—because of its magnitude, because of its scope—that if we don't get it right, we might not be able to reverse, and we may not be able to adapt sufficiently. There is such a thing as being too late when it comes to climate change."
The White House says the revised Clean Power Plan seeks to increase the required cuts in carbon emissions from the power sector, demanding they be slashed 32 percent from 2005 levels by 2030—up from the 30 percent requirement in the original draft regulation. Obama said such a reduction means "we'll be keeping 870 million tons of carbon dioxide pollution out of our atmosphere."
The regulation will also push for a national shift toward renewable energy such as solar and wind, moving away from coal-fired power.
"Right now our power plants are the source of about a third of America's carbon pollution—that's more pollution than our cars, our airplanes and our homes contribute combined."

Event Summary:
San Diego Forward: The Regional Plan, is a long term strategic plan developed by SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments) that analyses the region's development and "proposes a blueprint for a sustainable future for the San Diego region as well as a specific approach to help make that vision a reality." Specifically, 'San Diego Forward' lays out a plan until 2050 for infrastructure and transportation developments in the region, including road, rail systems, bus services and a bike plan. SANDAGs initial plan was thwarted by the courts in 2014 after a number of organizations challenged it based on its lack of consideration of the environment. In this upcoming event, we will look into whether the new plan reaches far enough to making a San Diego a sustainable city.
Nicole Capretz, leader of the San Diego Climate action campaign, will provide her input specifically also in view of the biking, walking and transit goals set out in the San Diego climate action plan. We will hear from Jana Clark, from the Cleveland National Forest, one of the organizations that challenged the initial plan, on whether the improvements to the plan have gone far enough. We will also hear from the executive director of BikeSD, a regional grassroots organization focused on advancing San Diego as 'a world-class bicycling city and create a more livable urban community by promoting everyday riding and advocating for bicycling infrastructure.'

California’s recent revisions to Title 24 put in place ambitious performance goals: all residential buildings must be Zero Net Energy (ZNE) by 2020, and all commercial buildings must follow suit by 2030. The code also applies to retrofit projects that pass certain thresholds. (A ZNE building produces as much energy on-site as it consumes on an annual basis.) These changes promise to reshape the construction industry in significant ways — and not just in California. Join us for a in-depth discussion with industry experts!!!

By accomplishing this feat, Lancaster aims to become one of the world's first net zero cities for electricity use by 2020.
R. Rex Parris
Lancaster native R. Rex Parris became the City's third directly-elected mayor in April 2008. His immediate aggressive stance regarding the overall well-being of Lancaster residents quickly generated dramatic results which have gained nationwide recognition. Due to his fervent dedication to progress, strong leadership style and many accomplishments toward the evolution of his hometown, Parris was re-elected in 2010 and 2012. The latter extended his mayoral duties for another four years.
Yolo County, CA
Yolo County staff has been attending meetings of the California Air Resources Board, the Climate Action Team, and other state bodies charged with implementation of AB 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, as well as monitoring activities of the California Supervisors Association of California and the League of California Cities. Implementation of state programs and policies to meet mandated reductions will involve many different parts of county government, including planning, land use, emergency services, solid waste management, and transportation. By monitoring these agencies the Board of Supervisors will be advised of opportunities and potential issues.

LOCATION:
Global Energy Network Institute (GENI)
1088 3rd Ave,
San Diego, CA 92101
(619) 595-0139
Join us for an intimate discussion around how San Diego is moving toward 100% Renewable Energy.
In the Climate Action Plan, Council President Todd Gloria helped launch the pledge for San Diego City to be 100% renewable by 2035. It's an achievable goal, but a long way from our current 8% generation. There are many cities who have reached 100% clean energy already. They have accomplished this in several ways and we can learn how they did it.
GENI & SDRES will host Councilman Gloria for an informal dialogue with members and guests about 100% sustainability in the region. The evening will include an overview of San Diego's Climate Action plan, examining what other cities around the nation and globe are doing to achieve this goal, and unveiling the new '100% renewable San Diego' GENI landing page.
Todd Gloria became the Interim Mayor of the City of San Diego on August 30, 2013. He was elected to his second term as Councilmember representing District Three on June 5, 2012. He served as Council President in 2013 and was re-elected Council President for 2014. In Todd's first term as a Councilmember, he championed increased infrastructure investment, resulting in miles of smoother roads, subsequently coining the term "sexy streets." He also led the way for San Diego's first permanent year-round homeless service center, was a leading advocate for transportation options including a stronger public transit system and pedestrian and bicycle projects, and authored Proposition C, which updated the City's veterans hiring policy.
Todd is a graduate of the University of San Diego and a member of the Tlingit Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. Todd is a native San Diegan, third generation resident of District Three, and a dedicated public servant. Having learned from his parents the importance of leaving things better than when you first found them, Todd enthusiastically and tirelessly works to ensure San Diego lives up to its name America's Finest City.

Chula Vista Solar Home Tour
Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Looking to Go Solar?
The Center for Sustainable Energy is hosting the 1st annual Chula Vista Solar Homes Tour. The tour will feature three sites chosen by CSE which are home to a solar electric system, as well as other energy efficiency measures and/or electric vehicles.
The tour offers homeowners the opportunity to talk with fellow Chula Vista residents and solar experts about the innovative solutions they are employing to
Featured Solar Home Tour Sites
Ryan's Way Family
949 Paseo La Cresta, Chula Vista, CA 91910
The O’Connor-Florez family is much bigger than the name may imply. That’s because it includes the immediate family as well as several developmentally challenged residents and care providers. Inspired by their son Ryan’s struggles with developmental problems, the family established four Ryan’s Way Adult Residential Facilities. The family is equally passionate about the environment. All four residences have solar panels and use other energy-saving measures. A lease for the solar systems is saving them hundreds of dollars a month on utility bills.
Tim and Maho’s Home
574 Vista Miranda, Chula Vista, CA 91910
Admittedly, Tim and Maho had an advantage when they decided to go solar – he is a corporate energy consultant. Since they moved into their Chula Vista home in 2007, Tim has taken many measures to reduce their family’s energy use – from LED lighting to a tankless water heater, which cut their natural gas bill in half. But he found that rising electricity costs were going up faster than his efforts to cut consumption, so they bought a small solar system that offsets their reduced consumption. They also own a hybrid car and an electric vehicle.
Fahti and Carlos’ Home
632 Port Dunbar, Chula Vista, CA 91913
For Fahti and Carlos, going solar was all about the long-term investment and savings. As monthly energy bills soared as high as $425, they knew they had to do something. In January 2013, they had solar installed and their energy bills dropped substantially, to as low as $27 in August 2014. They’ve been in their home for 12 years and don’t plan on moving, and their experience with solar makes Fahti Jones say, “I wish we had done it sooner.”

Summary: Join GENI for a presentation and discussion on how US cities have become 100% Renewable and how San Diego can achieve 100% Renewable energy sooner then expected.
Event Details: San Diego is a leader in clean energy development in the state and nation. San Diego Gas & Electric has reached the 23.6% renewable energy portfolio mandate and is on track to reach 33% by 2020. Commercial business and homeowners have added another 3% from solar PV on 33,000 rooftops. It's worth celebrating!Yet the EPA features the Top U.S. Institutions and Cities that have achieved 100% renewable energy for their communities - 7 local governments have done it, including two in California: Santa Monica and Yolo County (near Davis). California is a state that is blessed with abundant solar, wind and geothermal resources - so it's possible for San Diego to achieve the same goal if we have the political will and business commitment.
Peter Meisen, Director of the Global Energy Network Institute (GENI) and Aya Futami Chafey, Research Associate with GENI have researched the 7 cities that attained 100% renewable status, and will present their findings. Open discussion to follow on what they have done and what San Diego can do.

SAN DIEGO: Nano Structures - Energy Harvesting (Solar Cell) & Storage (Battery) Devices
SDRES x ESW-UCSD Tech Talk featuring Dr. Shadi Dayeh Wednesday April 9, 2014 @ 5:30-7PM
Location:
University of California San Diego
Jacobs Hall, Henry Booker Room 2512
9500 Gilman Dr
La Jolla, CA 92093
Engineering a more efficient world requires efforts at crossroads of multidisciplinary fields that can impact the way we harvest, store, transmit, and use energy. The Integrated Electronics and Bio-Interfaces Laboratory pursues fundamental research aiming at advancing the discovery of new combinations of dissimilar electronic materials to build better solar cells, batteries, power transistors and opto-electronic devices. This presentation will summarize our efforts in building new types of battery electrodes with dynamic monitoring of atomic-scale electrochemical reactions that take place during charge cycling. We demonstrate for the first time that interface and bandgap engineering of electrochemical reactions can be utilized to control the nanoscale ionic transport/insertion paths and thus may be a new tool to define the electrochemical reactions in Li-ion batteries. We will also discuss a recent breakthrough developed in our laboratories in integrating thick crack free materials for efficient high power switches on cheaper substrates.
Please join SDRES and UCSD Engineers for a Sustainable World to hear about this exciting new technology!
Shadi A. Dayeh received his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California San Diego in 2008 and joined Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Director fellow and was promoted in 2010 to a Distinguished Oppenheimer fellow. In Nov. 2012, he came back to the ECE department at UCSD as an Assistant Professor, where he directs a program with efforts in a broad range of hetero-integrated electronic materials and devices for low/high power electronics, energy harvesting and storage, as well as for electro-neural interfaces. He is the recipient of Electronics Materials Conference outstanding oral presentation (2006), the Material Research Society graduate student award and best poster award (2007), PCSI young scientist award (2007), the 1st place in Advanced Technology Workshop paper competition (2008), a LANL Distinguished Postdoctoral Performance Award (2010) and multiple LANL Achievement Awards (2009, 2010, 2011) and an NSF Early CAREER Award (2014).

State and local agencies partnered with private utilities could leverage a portion of San Diego’s 300 miles of highway and/or 65 miles of trolley line to
realize this solution. Jamaal Knight will discuss Roadside Sun Diego, a proposed public/private solar photovoltaic (PV) infrastructure project that could generate clean energy along San Diego trolley-lines and highway walls, medians and right-of-ways. It could be the first and only road-side solar project in California.
About Jamaal Knight: Jamaal Knight is a San Diego native, currently working as a Legal Analyst on an IP litigation project with a local wireless technology
company. Renewable energy, specifically solar, became a field of interest to Mr. Knight while researching the state and local energy regulatory structure in
law school.
After learning that ‘land requirements’ and ‘access to transmission’ were two of the major impediments to California meeting its renewable energy goals, Mr. Knight began independently researching solar solutions that can be built into a city’s existing infrastructure, including utility-scale, solar projects sited along highways and transit lines.
Modeled after successful 'roadside solar' installations in Europe and now other U.S. states, Mr. Knight is looking to forge partnerships to develop a local public/private solar project (tentatively named 'Roadside Sun Diego').
After teaming up with the San Diego Renewable Energy Society (SDRES) and members of UCSD’s engineering dept., Mr. Knight is serving as ‘Project Adviser’ to a group of students working on an independent study project collecting preliminary site feasibility data for ‘roadside solar’ applications in San Diego.
Mr. Knight earned his undergraduate degree at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA and a J.D. from the University of San Diego, School of Law.
